Imaging of the neck, thyroid, salivary glands and lymph nodes

Neck ultrasound allows imaging of abnormalities and pathological changes in the neck and oral cavity. It is used in the diagnosis of disorders of the thyroid gland, larynx, salivary glands and adjacent lymph nodes. The examination makes it possible to determine the existence of lesions, even at an early stage of their formation and possible development.

Indications for ultrasound of the neck, thyroid, salivary glands and lymph nodes

  • appearance of nodules/thickening in the neck and mouth area
  • enlargement of the neck circumference
  • The appearance of pain in the neck and mouth, including in the lymph nodes
  • The appearance of depressions/ bulges in the neck area, especially the appearance of asymmetry
  • enlargement of lymph nodes
  • salivary gland pain
  • unidentified pain radiating into the ear
  • prolonged sore throat
  • abnormal results of thyroid hormones

Contraindications for ultrasound of the neck, thyroid, salivary glands and lymph nodes

There are no contraindications to performing ultrasound of the neck and oral region – the examination is completely safe, regardless of the age of the patient. What’s more, it can also be performed without any concerns in pregnant and breastfeeding women. It can be performed in very short intervals, as the high-frequency sound waves responsible for the formation of the image do not affect the human body in any negative way.

Preparation for ultrasound of the neck, thyroid, salivary glands and lymph nodes

Ultrasound of the neck, thyroid, salivary glands and lymph nodes does not require a doctor’s referral or special preparation. They can be performed at any time. To facilitate the visit, we suggest removing jewelry in the neck area.

Course of the study

A patient scheduled for an ultrasound of the neck, thyroid, salivary glands or lymph nodes should appear at PP DIAGNOSTYKA 30 minutes before the scheduled examination. This is because this time is necessary to fill out the required documentation and, above all, the medical questionnaire, which is an extremely important element for the radiologist. Upon entering the office, a medical history is taken. In addition, the doctor reviews any previous medical records relating to the area being examined. The patient is then asked to lie on his back and tilt his head back. In this position, the radiologist performs the ultrasound examination, guiding the head of the camera within the examined area. The examination lasts from a few to several minutes, and at the end of the examination the doctor discusses what has been imaged, draws up and issues a written result and any further recommendations.
