Imaging of lymph nodes

Lymph nodes are located in different areas of the human body, and performing an ultrasound examination makes it possible to assess their size, structure and detect possible lesions/pathological changes – even at their early stages. In ultrasound examination of lymph nodes it is also possible to assess their vascularization by using the Doppler method – it measures blood flow, so we have knowledge of the cross-section of the nodes and their capacity.

Indications for lymph node ultrasound:

  • appearance of pain in the lymph nodes
  • enlargement of lymph nodes
  • appearance of thickening/nodules/ bulges in the area of lymph nodes
  • change in the appearance of the skin around the lymph nodes

Contraindications for ultrasound of lymph nodes

There are no contraindications to performing an ultrasound of lymph nodes – the test is completely safe and painless. What’s more, it can also be performed without any worries in children, pregnant and breastfeeding women. It can be performed in very short intervals, as the high-frequency sound waves responsible for the formation of the image do not affect the human body in any negative way.

Preparation for ultrasound examination of lymph nodes

Ultrasound of lymph nodes does not require a doctor’s referral or special preparation. They can be performed at any time.

Course of the study

A patient scheduled for an ultrasound of the lymph nodes should appear at PP DIAGNOSTYKA 30 minutes before the scheduled examination. This is because this time is necessary to fill out the required documentation, and above all the medical questionnaire, which is an extremely important element for the radiologist. Upon entering the office, a medical history is taken. In addition, the doctor reviews any previous medical records relating to the area being examined. The patient is then asked to take an appropriate position and expose the area being examined. The radiologist performs the ultrasound examination, guiding the camera head within the lymph nodes to be examined. The examination usually lasts several minutes, and at the end of the examination the doctor discusses what has been imaged, draws up and issues a written result and any further recommendations.
