Craniofacial RM examination

MRI is a non-invasive test used to image the human body. It is often used as an adjunct to a previously performed CT scan or other imaging studies such as ultrasound. MRI has the advantage of better resolution between different soft tissues, whichmakes itthe procedure ofchoice forsoft tissue imaging among otherscraniofacial. MR is one of the finest imaging techniques currently available in medicine.

A number of procedures performed with magnetic resonance imaging require the administration of a contrast agent (sk), but in many cases this is not necessary. Many times the decision to administer contrast is made during the examination.

Sometimes, however, in order to even more clearly visualize the imaged structures, mainly with the aim of eliminating the proliferative process or other pathological changes – during the examination the above-mentioned contrast is used.

Indications for craniofacial MR:

  • Cancers occurring in the facial region – most often cancers of the
mouth, tongue, nasal cavity, salivary glands, orbits and eyeballs, sometimes also sinuses,
or other disease entities associated with the area,
  • inflammatory lesions of unknown etiology,
  • developmental defects,
  • Pre- and post-operative follow-up,
  • traumatic changes,
  • Facial nerve palsy,
  • Craniofacial pain,
  • many more…

Contraindications to performing a craniofacial MR examination:

  • pacemaker,
  • insulin pump,
  • neurostimulators,
  • cochlear implant,
  • suspected unknown origin of metal foreign body.

Preparing for a craniofacial MR examination:

  • It is necessary to remove all metal components,
  • Bringing with you all medical records, especially imaging records from previous examinations,
  • Forgoing makeup and hairspray on a given day.

After the test: if contrast has been administered, the patient must stay at the facility for observation for up to 20 minutes to rule out the possibility of an allergic reaction.
